Vice President Juan Carlos Varela of Panama and Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Timothy Yang signed a repatriation pact today and vowed to strengthen their country’s bilateral relationship which dates back to China’s Qing Dynasty in 1909.

Panama is one of only 23 small countries which recognize Taiwan, formally called the Republic of China.  Taiwan donates generously to its supporters as it does in Panama’s case.

Varela is on a four-day diplomatic visit to Taiwan, his first time on the island, where he is also scheduled to visit the Taipei 101 skyscraper, the world’s tallest building from 2004 to 2010.
