Less than one hundred of Panama’s 350 to 400 snake species are venomous, but they have killed 203 people in the Province of Cocle so far this year.

Of the 203 fatal snake bite victims, 117 were men and 86 were women, according to the city of Penonome’s Aquilino Tejeira Hospital statistics.

Most bites were from Bothrop genus of poisonous pitvipers which has 32 recognized species.  The majority of Bothrops – a name that comes from the Greek words for pit and eye – are nocturnal, but some are active during the day at higher altitudes.

La Prensa reports.
