According to official statistics released by the Comptroller General’s Office, one person from the Republic of Kiribati entered Panama through Tocumen International Airport this year.
Kiribati is a small island nation located in the tropical central Pacific Ocean which gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1979 and became a full member of the United Nations in 1999. Its citizens are called I-Kiribati.
The Republic is best known by outsiders as the site of the Battle of Tarawa in the Pacific Theater of World War II, the site of one of the bloodiest battles in U.S. Marine Corps history.
Of the 192 countries recognized by the United Nations, about 1,237,455 people from 188 countries came to Panama through the international airport this year, including the one I-Kiribati.
