Panama Taxis Want Meters
Faced with the rising cost of gasoline, Panama taxi drivers are proposing to install meters to regulate fares.
Taxi union leader Augustin Prado says the meter will help provide a better service and incentivize taxi drivers to accept fares instead of refusing them the way they sometimes do when they don’t feel like driving to certain parts of the city. Prado also realizes that the Transit Authority will need to optimize the traffic light system to avoid bottlenecks throughout the city as meters tick away.
According to the proposal – which will be presented this week to the National Chamber of Transport – the meters would be funded by the approximately $250,000 that was promised to taxis when they went yellow, Panama America reports.
In the meantime, the zoned rates continue to apply.
