False Alarm: Retirees Still Protesting in Street
Despite certain reports last week that the retirees were going to back off street protesting in favor of negotiation, they were back Tuesday, blocking traffic for three hours on Via Transistmica.
The protest slogan, shouted by some 40 independent retirees, was: ”We are not asking for alms, We are claiming a right!”
Eladio Fernandez, the persistent head of the Independent Retiree Association, says the protests will continue on Thursday if the government does not provide a clear answer about the requested $75 social security increase.
“They are handling us like fools (pendejos),” Fernandez also said. “It has been over a year since they promised us an increase and they have not delivered.”
The retiree group criticized what they see as poor management of social security and said that Director of Social Security Guillermo Sáez Llorens wants to buy a $75,000 car and allot millions in salaries to his “fat monkey” companions.
“There is no medicine and they have us eating bananas,” one woman shouted.
