City Continues Fight Against Unstable Trees

Panama City Mayor Bosco Vallarino announced Friday that it is precautionary tree cutting time again in the capital district.

Over the past 11 months, Panama City has cut a total of 255 trees, and pruned approximately 350, according to official tree cutting statistics.  Trees were evaluated and designated for felling or pruning by a group of National Environmental Authority technicians.

The mayor launched the tree cutting campaign after the November 2009 death of Dr. David Robles, who was crushed by a tree while napping in his car outside of the Children’s Hospital in the Bella Vista neighborhood.

At that time, the environmental authority estimates that there were about 343 sickly trees in the city, 43 of which were in critical condition.  If the math is correct, there are still as many as 88 unstable trees out there.

There is no official word yet about reforestation plans for felled capital city trees.

La Prensa reports.
