African Lions Need Out of Chorrera
International animal protection associations are insisting that three African lions, currently held at the La Chorrera Zoo, be relocated.
The lions share an area of 4,305 square feet, almost 11,000 square feet less than the recommended roaming room for the three felines. Also of concern are the sanitary conditions and how the cages are cleaned.
Transforming the zoo into a sanctuary that meets world standards would cost at least $35,000, says Patrick O’Marr, regional head of the World Society for the Protection of Animals for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
Andrea Guevara, executive director of the Association of Friends of Animals and Nature, said the Summit Botanical Park Board has shown interest and is already planning a site for the lions.
Negotiations began on Wednesday night.
