In an agreement signed by Vice President Juan Carlos Varela and new U.S. Ambassador to Panama Phyllis Powers, the United States agreed to donate $10 million to strengthen security in Panama.

Varela said that this non-refundable donation will focus cooperation on maritime and border security; combating transnational crime; equipment and training; and strengthening rule of law.

Powers added that the United States shares the preoccupation of all Panamanians regarding crime, gangs, violence and the corrupt influence of drug trafficking.

La Prensa reports.

First come the generous handouts, then the re-establishment of US military bases. This is the way of American neo-Colonization and domination. Everyone knew this day would come. Vasco Nunez de Balboa… 5.0

Incidentally numbers-wise, the United States acquired control of the Panama Canal Zone from Panama for $10 million in 1904.

Intriguing… It seems logical that they would be keen on re-asserting control over the newly renovated canal as it nears completion, in the interests of national security.

I wonder if the 1.2 million spent on the restoration of the Presidential palace in Casco Viejo is coming out of this 10 millon dollar security strengthening charity fund? And what will they use the rest for. !0 million dollars really isn’t that much money when it comes to strengthening the security of an entire corruption and crime ridden country. It’ll probably be spent on new bullet proof SUV’s for select members of the country’s power elite.
