Siamese Twins Successfully Separated in Panama
In the first operation of its kind in Panama and Central America, Siamese twins Hannah Yinneth and Hannah Yanneth Fernández Gil were separated on Tuesday.
A team of more than 75 people led by Panamanian doctors Julio Alessandria and Ramon Policart worked for 8 hours to unjoin the one-year-old twins who were connected at the liver.
The patients are in stable condition and will remain in intensive care for a week.
The term Siamese Twins originated with Chang and Eng Bunker, brothers born in Siam, now Thailand, who lived from 1811 to 1874 and traveled with P.T. Barnum’s circus for many years before settling down on a North Carolina plantation. Their livers were also fused but independently complete.

Remarkable. Can we get a photo and follow up story?
Guillermo Sáez-Llorens, head of Social Security, said he visited the twins this morning in intensive care and the twins had a quiet night. He also said the operation was a triumph for all Panamanians.
Reports indicate that Yineth is experiencing anticipated difficulties with her kidneys and blood coagulation. She is in delicate but stable condition and is being treated.
Hannah Yaneth may leave the intensive care unit by Monday and the medical team has positioned a mirror near her hospital bed to help her adjust to her new appearance. Hannah Yineth is still in critical condition but has shown small improvements.
Hannah Yineth may undergo a kidney transplant abroad. The surgery depends on finding a donor with a kidney appropriately sized to a one year old. In the meantime, Hannah Yaneth will continue with dialysis treatment. Her sister, Hannah Yaneth continues her recovery.
Hannah Yinneth died Sunday, October 10 of heart failure.
May this little angel rest in peace and accompany her sisters side through her life as her guardian angel. Hannah lift your wings and fly free !
Hannah – you are in a better place with no pains and no aches. May you enjoy the angels in Heaven and your soul rest in Peace.
