The district of San Felipe is launching a garbage collection pilot program denominated Operation Cleanliness in the Casco Antiguo.

This joint effort by the Casco Antiguo Friends and Neighbors Association and DIMAUD, Panama’s municipal urban and residential waste management department, kicked off the program yesterday with an educative musical clown and salsa show in Cathedral Plaza.

Residents may take out their trash between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m., and garbage trucks will remove trash bags within those hours.  The program is also starting to remove the large bins that suffer from construction and residential waste build-up, garbage juice and foul odors.  Instead, residents and business owners may leave garbage bags outside their buildings for house by house pick-up.

And, there will be inspectors in the neighborhood who will remind residents to dump garbage within the designated timeframe.  They will also be on hand to hand out fines to violators.
