Eradicating Latrines in Las Tablas

Las Tablas, the capital of the Los Santos province, has embarked on a project to make latrines a thing of the past.

District representative Domicio Ruiz said that unfortunately people of low resources have not been able to connect to the waste water system and have been obliged to use latrines.

“It seems like a lie, but we did not realize that latrines existed in the center of the community,” Ruiz said.

The project would include channeling the La Ermita, Santa Cruz and Santa Isabel streams where latrine waste has historically accumulated.

To date, 15 of the 30 bathrooms with toilets have been built at a cost of between $1,200 and $1,300 per person, La Critica reports.

In somewhat related news, a woman unwittingly birthed a baby into a San Miguelito latrine in June of this year.

Maybe they should rename the capital of Los Santos to Las Latrines.
