City Green Lung Turns Potential Dengue Pool

In March of this year, 181 trees, also known as the Obarrio neighborhood lung, were cut down to make way for development.

Now, the area appears abandoned with a ditch perfect for Aedes aegypti procreation, the mosquito responsible for transmitting dengue.

The green lung was razed, despite protests by environmental groups, to make way for the construction of the Las Americas Golden Tower Panama hotel.

UPDATE:  A day later, health authorities fined Las Americas Golden Tower Panama $3,000 and another company, Inmobiliaria, $5,000 for maintaining Aedes aegypti breeding grounds.
