The Mysterious Macaw Disappearances of El Valle

In the quiet mountain valley of Panama’s El Valle de Anton, macaws have been mysteriously disappearing from the El Nispero Zoo aviaries.

Over the last eight years, 36 macaws have vanished into thin air.  Last year, in a strange variation from the norm, when two more macaws went missing, so did a South Mexican turkey from the Darien.

The zoo’s director, Carlos Mauricio Caballero, said no one knows who might be responsible but that surely the culprits are interested in exotic bird species.  He has urged authorities to investigate.

A macaw on the black market can be sold for $600 and legally for $2,500.  Abroad, macaws have been known to fetch $70,000 a bird from Japanese collectors and up to $10,000 in the United States.
