Retirees March on Presidency

Panama’s retirees and pensioners will walk from Plaza 5 de Mayo to the Presidency today to petition the pension increase promised to them by President Martinelli.

Back in April, after meeting with the President, Independent Retirees and Pensioners Association leader Eladio Fernandez left confident that a $50 a month increase was in the works.  He had the President’s word and has given the government until January before the retirees take to the streets.

Be as that may, Director of Social Security Guillermo Saez-Llorens says this increase would represent $38 million a year and diminish the reserves for future retirees.

Yesterday, President Martinelli said the government will have to look for funds.
