Panama has a new project called Aeropolis or Airport City.

Based on projections that $8 million passengers will travel through Panama’s Tocumen International Airport in 2015, government designs are in the works for a “small commercial city” of hotels, convention centers and commercial spaces.  The concept even includes a hospital to facilitate medical tourism.

The small commercial city would be built on 741 acres acquired from the University of Panama this past June for $109 million.  Government master planners expect the concept to be in place and lots ready for public sector development in 2011.  With an estimated investment of $400 million, Aeropolis will compliment two new wings, adding a total of 32 new gates.

Tocumen received 2.7 million passengers in 2005 and 4.8 million last year.

La Prensa reports.
