Javier Benjamin Beitia, age 23, made a mistake and turned down a dead end street on his motorcycle early Sunday morning.

The road led directly into the precipice of the Chico River in the province of Chiriqui.  Although he plunged around 5 a.m., he was spotted by 7:30 a.m. and firefighters began rescue efforts.

With the help of a backhoe from a local sand extraction company, Beitia was pulled out of the river by 8 a.m. alive.  He was taken to the regional hospital in David with fractures and remains under observation.

It is presumed that the young man was traveling under the effects of alcohol, El Siglo reports.
