Two National Border Service police were injured yesterday when a land mine exploded in the Darien Province near the Colombian border.

A government release confirms that the incident occurred during the officers’ rounds of Luciano, Trinidad and Isaias beaches.  Both were wounded in the explosion.

They were carried by helicopter to Panama and hospitalized in the San Fernando Clinic where they underwent surgery.  One lost part of a leg and the other part of a hand, La Prensa reports.  Martinelli says they are in stable condition and has a message for the narcotraffickers, not the guerillas, he blames for these mines.

“Don’t play with Panama,” he said.  ”It’s enough now of passing drugs over the border and causing the death of so many innocents.”
