Belgian Company Wins Panama Canal Dredging Contract
The Panama Canal authority picked Belgian company Dredging International NV’s $40 million bid to dredge more of the man-made Gatun Lake.
Dredging International beat out other companies including China Harbour Engineering Company, Netherlands-based Royal Boskalis Westminster, U.S.-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corp. and Belgium’s Van Oord Groep NV and Jan de Nul. Bids ranged from $58 million to $98 million.
Dredging International will be charged with excavating approximately 4.6 million cubic meters in the northern reaches of the lake as part of the Panama Canal expansion project. If the math is correct, dredging would then cost approximately $8.7 million per cubic meter.
