This morning, the head of Panama’s Tourism Authority, Solomon Shamah, spoke to TVN Noticias about the challenges of cutting off cell phone service to Panama’s prison inmates.

The main challenge, he says, is that prisons are in the middle of cities “so when a prison is blocked, you probably block an entire community.”

He went on to explain that a thorough job is underway to find the coding, the antennas and their reach so has to jam reception to the prisons without negatively impacting the surrounding communities.

The Minister of Tourism did not speak on preventative measures to keep cell phones out of jails.

My question is this: What is Mr. Shamah, Panama’s Tourism Authority, doing meddling in issues related to prison cell phone use? Maybe someone should draw to his attention the horribly tasteless and offensive nature of Panama’s new tourism propaganda posters. (See recent article).

[...] In somewhat related news, the tourism minister also recently spoke about cell phone service in Panama’s penal system. [...]
