Direct Flights from Panama to Spain Are Coming
Spanish Iberia airlines will begin direct flights from Madrid to Panama City, starting October 1.
Previously, Iberia passengers traveling between the two cities would have to layover in either Miami, Costa Rica or Guatemala. The company will fly Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Last March, President of Iberia Francisco Vazquez met with President Martinelli and signed an agreement with Minister of Tourism Salomon Shamah in which the state agreed to provide $4 million over a three year period in exchange for destination promotion, La Prensa reports.
Panama City currently connects to approximately 65 destinations nonstop with main carriers including American, Continental, Copa, Delta, KLM, Iberia, Mexicana, Spirit and Taca.
In somewhat related news, Iberia made cuts last year after a poor showing in 2008 and during the first quarter of 2009. Enrique Dupuy, Iberia’s chief financial officer, told CNN at the time that he still expected the airline to eventually merge with British Airways.
