Lee Myung-Bak is Coming
President Ricardo Martinelli and Vice President Juan Carlos Varela met with the South Korean Vice Minister of Foreign and Business Relations, Shin Kak-Soo, yesterday.
Kak-Soo, who was in Panama to attend the IX SICA-Korea Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation, expressed the South Korean interest in developing Panama’s natural resources and infrastructure, most notably the environmentally-controversial Cerro Colorado mine. Among the topics discussed was a Free Trade Agreement and avoiding double taxation, part of Panama’s strategy to get off the OECD list of tax havens.
The meeting also laid the ground for South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak’s June visit. The visit will represent the first summit between Panamanian and South Korean heads of state since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1962.
