Panama’s Public Services Authority reports a 12 percent increase in energy demand from 2008 to 2009.  In prior years, demand had grown by an average five to six percent.

Nineteen hydroelectric projects, an investment of $1,736 million, are expected to begin operation in 2010 and 2011, generating an additional 700 MW.  The projects are located primarily in the provinces of Chiriqui, Bocas del Toro and Veraguas.

Panama is in the energy-rationing danger zone, operating on the 2009 capacity of 1,789 MW, La Estrella reports. It has also increased its use of digital roadside billboard advertising in the last year.
