Casco Viejo Streets Full of Holes: Need Millions
The three avenues, 15 streets and related sidewalks of Casco Antiguo, also known as Casco Viejo and San Felipe, have fallen into disrepair.
David Cadavid, Director of the Office of Casco Antiguo, told La Prensa that rehabilitation of the neighborhood’s streets and sidewalks requires $15 million, and the investment should be made in a continuous fashion or costs will be higher. If the math is correct, that would be about $83,333 per street or avenue, if all the streets and avenues are considered as equal units.
Heavy vehicles aggravate the problem. Decree No. 51 of April 22, 2004 establishes that only vehicles under seven tons, under seven meters long, two meters wide and 2.75 meters tall can circulate in the old city’s streets.
But, Casco Antiguo is being renovated as gentrification has taken over this once slummy neighborhood, and this renovation requires frequent construction truck visits.
