A National Police operative, code name “Comrade,” seized 1.5 tons of war gear in the bunker of a rented house in the El Frances community in Dolega, Chiriqui.

Among the items were AK 47s and the corresponding munitions, grenades, submachine guns, TNT explosives, mortar grenades, telescopic lenses, RPG 7 anti-tank rocket propelled grenade weapons and bayonets.

A foreigner is being held in relation to this discovery, reports La Prensa.  Panama America reports that the war bunker residence belongs to a Guatemalan sociology professor employed by The Autonomous University of Chiriqui.

Incidentally, the Dolega district made the news a month ago when Paul Roger Nunes, an U.S. Citizen, was brutally murdered in his home.

UPDATE: David Ramos, Sub Commissioner of the Chiriqui police said that the weapons were of Soviet fabrication. The Guatemalan professor to whom the house with the bunker belongs, Jorge Vinicio Jimenez Montenegro, is said to have leftist tendencies and to have fled fighting in Guatemala when he was 20 years old after he witnessed the killing of his parents, La Critica reports. The arms are believed to have been destined for South America.
