Another Panamanian Ex-President in Line for Investigation
Former President Mireya Moscoso may soon be under investigation for alleged irregular handling of some $70 million.
The amount was donated by Taiwan to the Mar del Sur Foundation during Moscoso’s 1999 to 2004 term. Although the denunciation has been in the Supreme Court for nearly five years, Moscoso enjoyed parliamentary immunity as a deputy to the Central American Parliament.
Now that her parliament time is up, Moscoso’s case will fall into the hands of the new controversially-appointed Attorney General, Giuseppe Bonissi, La Estrella Reports.
Mireya Elisa Moscoso, Panama’s first woman president, has an interior design diploma from Miami-Dade Community College and is the widow of former President Arnulfo Arias.
In somewhat related news, former President Chen Shui-bian who governed Taiwan during Moscoso’s term, was sentenced to life in prison last year for embezzlement, bribery, money laundering and forgery and fined $15.3 million for his mishandling of a special state fund and land deals.
