Beginning 2009: Taco Bell vs. The Taco Maker
U.S. Tex-Mex Giant to face off with Puerto Rico’s largest Mexican quick-service restaurant in the Panama Arena.
Taco Bell had a bit of a head start with the June 24th opening of its first branch in Multiplaza. In the next months, the chain plans to open additional branches in the El Dorado, Albrook and Metro Malls. Taco Bell first visited Panama in the 1980s. It is also part of the Yum!Group, so it has KFC, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen and Quiznos in its corner, represented by Franquicias Panameñas.
This month, underdog, The Taco Maker, opened its first location in Albrook Mall with plans to open 20 more franchises over the next eight years. TTM’s target audience – younger tech savvy consumers who consume things like “The Maker”, a one-pound burrito with almost a half pound of meat (not yet available in Panama although franchises may be.)
No word yet who Mrs. Mendoza is rooting for.
